Key research
Cardiovascular magnetic resonance, fibrosis, and prognosis in dilated cardiomyopathy
Journal of the American College of Cardiology, 2005
Why it matters: This study is one of the most widely cited papers in cardiac MRI research. It was the first to challenge the assumption that poor heart function (ejection fraction) was the best predictor of cardiac death in patients with heart failure not caused by coronary disease.
Key findings: Myocardial scarring detected by cardiac MRI is a more powerful predictor of worse outcomes than heart function.
Clinical impact: Multiple studies have replicated these findings and cardiac MRI detection of scarring is now being used to identify the sickest patients who need more aggressive treatment, for example defibrillators.

The role of cardiovascular magnetic resonance in patients with chest pain, raised troponin, and unobstructed coronary arteries
European Heart Journal, 2007
Why it matters: This study addressed a group of patients who have the signs and symptoms of a heart attack but no evidence of blockages in their coronary arteries. These patients are often misdiagnosed or not given any diagnosis at all.
Key finding: Using cardiac MRI in these patients provided a new diagnosis in two-thirds of cases and excluded life-altering illnesses in the remaining third.
Clinical impact: Recognition of this patient group has grown significantly, and cardiac MRI is now part of the standard workup for these patients. Getting an accurate diagnosis is essential, as it can determine medical treatment and may affect factors such as insurance or employment.

Role of cardiovascular magnetic resonance as a gatekeeper to invasive coronary angiography in patients with heart failure of unknown etiology
Circulation, 2011
Why it matters: Invasive tests were commonly used to determine whether heart failure was caused by coronary artery blockages.
Key finding: Cardiac MRI is a non-invasive investigation that can safely identify which patients need invasive testing and which patients can safely avoid it.
Clinical impact: The majority of patients could be safely steered away from invasive procedures, which proved to be more cost-effective than routine invasive investigations at the time.

How research informs integrative cardiology
Dr. Assomull’s research and expertise are key to his integrative cardiology approach.
Evidence-based precision: A deep knowledge of advanced imaging allows Dr. Assomull to recommend the right tests, interpret results, and make precise diagnoses.
Research-driven risk assessment: His pioneering work on risk stratification influences how he assesses patients’ cardiovascular risk and determines who needs treatment and lifestyle modification.
Critical evaluation of treatments: With his involvement in landmark publications like ORBITA, Dr. Assomull has unique insight into the evidence behind common procedures and treatments, ensuring patients receive the most suitable interventions based on their individual circumstances.
Innovation in prevention: Dr. Assomull’s experience drives his commitment to preventative cardiology. He understands that early intervention and lifestyle modification are a core principle of cardiology.
This combination of academic excellence and clinical innovation ensures that patients receive care grounded in the latest evidence with an integrative, preventative approach.
